RADIO ONE:
LEGEND OF THE COSMIC COWBOY
29 January 2024
When I was a boy, if I wasn’t outside getting into some marvelous mischief with the kids in the neighborhood, I was usually locked away in my bedroom in magical isolation listening to music. This was before Wi-Fi and streaming music, so I had to rely on my trusty collection of CDs and Cassettes, and my parent's record collection. In addition to this, I hung out heavily with the local college radio station, as well as other local and national public stations to keep me supplied with new tunes. I loved the way I got to know each DJ individually through their selection and how they would deliver it.
When a song would turn me on in a major way, I’d toss in a partially used blank cassette tape and record the song directly from the radio. Later, I’d call in and request it to be played again so I could get a better take on my radio mixtape. If I really loved it, I’d head out and take a risk on the full album, later catching up on previous releases, while following their current and future careers. I still hang out with many of these trusted songwriters, singers, and performers today!
In 2000, when I was a senior in high school, my love for radio came full circle when I began DJing at the local college station. I was “The Radio Flyer — taking you higher than you’ve ever been before!” I did that for the next 4 years, producing a 2 hour show each week which would air live on Thursday evenings from 8-10 PM.

Sharing music with the ones I love has always been a casual yet powerful and transparent way for me to communicate. Outside of my time on college radio, I would often make personalized mixtapes and CDs for special acquaintances and dear friends. The way I see it is — we’re friends. After all, you are on my website, so at the very least that makes us special acquaintances. But I’m always open for more…
With all this being said, I’d like to welcome you to Nothing To Protect Radio — a whenever-it-feel-right show dedicated to the spirit of independent radio and the music that has been groovin’ my life as of late. With each show, I am committed to curating a unique and focused vibe while taking the listener on an uninterrupted journey of experience and discovery. For the first show, I thought I’d pay homage to that bright-eyed boy sitting behind the mic all those years ago. Here’s to the Radio Flyer, still taking you higher!
E.E. Cummings said, "To be nobody but
yourself in a world which is doing its best day and night to make you like everybody else means to fight the hard
est battle which any human being can fight and never stop fighting." I personally find it to be the easiest thing I've ever done. Either way, if you're still at it, consider yourself a cosmic yee-haw too!
Thank you to each artist for the gift of your music. If you’ve discovered anything that turns you on, don’t be afraid to go deeper. And if you feel led, please support them any way you can. If they've sailed on, share the legacy with everyone you love.
Thanks for listening! Have fun!
